The winery is located in the municipality of Cantenac in the Margaux area of the Médoc(Bordeaux). Its origins go back to a noble Lasalle estate in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was bought by the British wine merchant John Collingwood, whose daughter married the Irishman Mark Kirwan, who gave the estate its current name in 1775. During a visit to Bordeaux, the future US President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) visited Château Kirwan and classified it in the "second category". In the 1855 Bordeaux classification, the estate was awarded third place (Troisième Grand Cru Classé).
There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
