Producer description of "Château Guiraud"

The winery is located in Sauternes in the area of the same name in Graves (Bordeaux). The famous Château d'Yquem adjoins it to the north. In its obscure beginnings, the estate was known as "La Maison Noble du Blaye". The Essenault family, from whose estates the Château d'Issan emerged, are mentioned as the first owners. In 1766, the estate was acquired by the eponymous Bordeaux wine merchant Pierre Guiraud. After a chequered history, it was bought by the Canadian Hamilton Narby in 1981, who invested heavily in the building and cellar. Finally, in 2006, a group of investors led by the Peugeot family acquired a majority stake. Xavier Planty is now the operations manager. It was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux classification in 1855. The vineyards cover over 100 hectares of vines, planted with the Sémillon (65%) and Sauvignon Blanc (35%) varieties. The extremely long-lasting, noble sweet wine is matured for 18 to 24 months in 100% new barriques. The second wine is called "Le Dauphin de Chartreuse de Coutet". A dry wine is marketed under the name "G - Château Guiraud".
