The winery is located in the municipality of Arsac in the Margaux area of the Médoc(Bordeaux). The name is derived from the location, as it is situated on the highest piece of land in Margaux (Tertre = hill). Its origins date back to the 12th century. The d'Arsac, Montaigne, Arrérac, de Ségur and Mitchell families took turns in ownership. The latter was the first bottle producer in Bordeaux. In 1997, the estate was acquired by Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma. He invested large sums in the restructuring of the cellars and vineyards, as well as in the renovation of the château. In 2021, the estate was acquired by the Helfrich family, who run the wine trading group Les Grands Chais de France in Alsace. The estate is run by Frederic Helfrich and his sister Anne-Laure.
