Cellulose

Main component (also cellulose) of plant cell walls (mass proportion approx. 50%) and thus the most frequent organic compound and also the most frequent polysaccharide (see saccharides). Cellulose is an important raw material for paper production, as well as in the chemical industry and other areas. The substance is insoluble in water and in most organic solvents and is also not abrasive (surface-removing) or carcinogenic (carcinogenic). Therefore it is also suitable as a filter aid in winemaking, among other things. Filter aids made of cellulose or similar materials are also known as plate filters. Improper storage can have a negative effect on the taste - the so-called filter taste.
