Cell

The smallest unit of all living higher organisms such as humans, animals, plants, fungi, algae and certain microorganisms, which can possess all the characteristics of life. Single-cell organisms with a diameter of only 0.001 to 0.1 millimetres are, for example, bacteria and yeasts. Viruses do not have their own metabolism and no longer have all the properties required to reproduce independently. They require host cells, which they modify and destroy.
