Cathedral Court Baumann

The winery is located in the community of Guntersblum (Nierstein area) in the German wine growing region of Rheinhessen. The estate, formerly belonging to the Worms Cathedral Monastery, has been in family ownership since 1874. After training as a winegrower and viticultural technician and internships at the Klaus Keller (Flörsheim-Dalsheim) and Keth (Offstein) wineries, it has been managed by Alexander Baumann and his wife Chris in the fourth generation since 2004. The three-star hotel "Schlafgut Domhof" is connected to the estate. In 2007, the historical part of the winery was supplemented by the addition of an event area for wedding and family celebrations. The 150 m² event area with its vinotheque and kitchen blends in with the historic buildings. The landmark of the cathedral courtyard is the St. Peter carved in stone as a coat of arms on the entrance gate from 1754, which can also be found on the labels.

The vineyards cover around ten hectares of vines, some of which are also on the Red Slope. There are stocks in the individual sites Bornpfad, Eiserne Hand, Himmelthal and Kreuzkapelle (Guntersblum), as well as Heiligenbaum, Paterberg, Ölberg and Pettenthal (Nierstein). Half of the vineyards are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (one third of the stock), Silvaner,Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Scheurebe, Bacchus and Kerner, and half with the red wine varieties PinotNoir, PinotMeunier, Blauer Portugieser, Regent and Dornfelder. The motto of the house is "Quality originates in the vineyard". The quality criteria are consistent yield reduction and non-invasive or defensive cellar management.

The product range is divided into three lines: estate wines (refreshing and fruity), local wines (from the regionally typical soils of red slope, loess and limestone) and site wines (from small fillets of selected top sites). The local and premium wines are mostly fermented spontaneously. Depending on the type of wine, the wines are aged in stainless steel tanks or, like the premium wines, in barriques. The premium wines of the house are Riesling from Niersteiner Pettenthal, Riesling from Guntersblumer Himmelthal and the Spätburgunder Kreuz-Kapelle matured in barrique. Around 50,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. Bottled vintner sparkling wine, sparkling wine, mulled wine, grape juice, grape liqueur and marc spirit are also produced.
