Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition

The international wine and spirits competition was founded in 2008 by the Californian-born and Hong Kong-based journalist and wine critic Debra Meiburg (MW). The main sponsor and name sponsor is the Hong Kong-based airline "Cathay Pacific". Meiburg is also a member of the jury, with her chairmanship. The jurors come from China, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and India. The event is held in partnership with the International Wine & Spirit Competition and is now the largest of its kind in Asia. The main objective is to select wines and spirits especially for the Asian market and, as a special feature, to support the prize-winning producers with a worldwide PR campaign. The wine evaluation is carried out according to the 100-point system based on blind tastings. Products with a minimum number of points of 90+ gold (excellent), 80+ silver (excellent) and 75+ silver (above average) will reach the final round. There are the tasting categories region, area, grape variety, type (still wine, sparkling wine, liqueur wine, rice wine, spirits), vintage and age. At the "Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair" taking place in November, the final result will be presented or published at a gala. See also under Awards and Wine Events.
