The DO area for red wines, rosé wines and white wines is located in the Spanish region of Catalonia. It used to be part of the DO area Penedès and was classified as an independent area in 2001 at the instigation of the famous oenologist and winery owner Miguel A. Torres (*1941). The vineyards cover 3,600 hectares of vines. The area is divided into two geographically separate zones. The first zone forms the triangle Tarragona in the south, Barcelona in the northeast and Lleida in the northwest and the second zone is located north of Girona, directly on the border to France at the foot of the Pyrenees. The most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Macabeo, Parellada and Xarello, the most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo).
