The white grape variety (also Cruzado de Rabo Ovelha) is a new cross between Fernão Pires x Montúa (Diagalves), which was confirmed by DNA analyses carried out in 2020. The cross was made in Portugal in 1948 by the breeder José Leão Ferreira de Almeida at the National Research Centre near Lisbon. It should not be confused with the Castelão Branco variety with a confusingly similar name. Castelo Branco is also a synonym for the Alcañón variety. The variety is grown in small quantities in the Centro region. In 2016, two hectares of vines were designated (Kym Anderson).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
