The white grape variety (also Castellão Branco) originates from Portugal. According to the latest DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Hebén x Alfrocheiro. It should not be confused with the new variety Castelo Branco with a confusingly similar name. It is not known whether there is a possible genetic link to the three red varieties Camarate Tinto, Castelão Francês or Trincadeira Preta (all with Castelão synonyms). The variety is grown in the Portuguese areas of Algarve, Beiras and Ribatejo. In 2016, 18 hectares of vines were reported, with a strong downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
