Castel Gandolfo

The Italian city (Latin: Castrum Gandulphi) belongs to the Metropolitan City of Rome (Città Metropolitana di Roma Capitale) in the Lazio region. It is best known for the papal residence located here, which has served as a summer residence for the popes since the 17th century and has been open to the public as a museum since 2016. In 2021, Pope Francis (civil name Jorge Mario Bergoglio) commissioned the oenologist Riccardo Cotarella as a consultant to produce a wine for the Vatican. For this, around two hectares of vines were planted in the papal gardens in Castel Gandolfo on the shores of Lake Albano, to be harvested for the first time in 2023. About 20,000 bottles of wine are expected, which will be ready to drink from 2026, but will be used exclusively for their own purposes, for example as Mass wine.
