Castel

The red grape variety (also Castel 19637) is an interspecific new variety between Cinsaut x Rupestris. It contains genes from Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in France by the breeder Pierre Castel. The early-maturing vine produces dark-coloured, alcohol-rich red wines that are mostly used as blends. It used to be widespread in Burgundy, France. Today, it is cultivated in small quantities in the British Columbia region. In 2016, three hectares of vineyards were designated there (Kym Anderson statistics).
