Carrega Branco

The white grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Barranquesa, Blanca de Monterrei, Branca de Monterrei, Carrega, Carrega Somera, Chavacana, Colgadeira, Malvasia Polta and Poilta. Nothing is known about the parentage or a possible genetic link to the red variety Carrega Tinto. The medium to late ripening vine is susceptible to botrytis. It produces low-alcohol, low-acid white wines, which are usually blended with more acidic varieties such as Rabigato. The variety is mainly grown in the Douro area, as well as in smaller quantities in Beiras and Trás-os-Montes. In 2016, 512 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
