The red grape variety originates from France. There are about 40 synonyms, so it is probably a very old variety. Some of them are Boutignon, Canut, Canut Noir, Chaussé Noir, Cony, Ferriolet, Goutaudet, Gros Boutiquon, Gros Machouquet, Gros Tripet, Grosse Pardotte, Machouquet, Pardotte Noire, Petit Pignon, Plant d'Aoste, Sauvignon Noir and Urize. The parentage (parentage) is unknown. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
