Captain Jani Kara

The red grape variety comes from the Ukraine. Synonyms are Adzhi Ibram Kara, Agii Ibram, Capitan Kara, Chaban Khalil Kara, Capitan Yani Kara and Ridzhaga. The medium maturing, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew. It yields full-bodied red wines with soft tannins. The variety is cultivated in the Sudak region in the Solnechnaya Dolina (Sun Valley) area in Crimea. There it is generally used in sweet dessert wines when blended with other Ukrainian local varieties such as Ekim Kara. Among other things, it is an ingredient in the well-known brand name wine Tschorny Doktor. In 2010, however, the official statistics did not show any stocks.
