The red grape variety (also known as Çal Karasi) originates from Turkey; the name means "Black of Çal", which refers to its origin on the peninsula of the same name in the south-west of the country.
It should not be confused with the morphologically very similar varieties Adakarasi, Horozkarasi, Kalecik Karasi or Papazkarasi (although it is suspected that some of them may be identical).
The medium to late ripening vine has a generally good resistance to vine diseases. It produces fruity, acidic, rather light-coloured red wines with soft tannins and a raspberry aroma. It is mostly used as a blend for red or rosé wines and is also used for the production of rosé wines.
