The regional appellation in the western section of the Loire wine region, or on the left bank of this river, comprises some 220 communes around the town of Angers. The former VDQS division Vins du Thouarsais was integrated in 2011. Red, rosé, white and sparkling wines are produced here under many AOC appellations. The wines from here were already appreciated in the Middle Ages, but at that time white wines dominated. The vineyards cover about 12,000 hectares of vine area. The much smaller Saumur appellation is located in the east, whose very similar wines can also be marketed as Anjou (but not vice versa).
