Buttafuoco dell'Oltrepò Pavese

DOC area (also Buttafuoco) for red wine in the Italian region of Lombardy. The part of the name "Buttafuoco" means "fire sparks". The wine previously included in the Oltrepò Pavese DOC area was classified as a separate area in 2010. The subzone within the Oltrepò Pavese area comprises the hilly areas south of the Via Emilia in the municipalities of Broni, Canneto Pavese, Castana, Cigognola, Montescano, Pietra de' Giorgi and Stradella in the province of Pavia.

The wine is made from Barbera (25-65%), Croatina (25-65%), and Uva Rara and/or Ughetta = Vespolina (max. 45%). Besides the Tranquillo (still wine) there is also a Frizzante. A speciality is the "Buttafioco Storico" (historical Buttafuoco) with strict guidelines of the "Club del Buttafuoco Storico" with 15 member companies. It must consist of at least 50% Croatina and 25% Barbera, matures for 12 months in barrique and 6 months in the bottle and is then bottled and marketed in special heavy bottles with sail ship relief.
