Butt

Old English unit of measurement for wine casks with a volume of 126 US gallons (3.785 litres) or two hogsheads or 477 litres. Depending on the use (wine types, beer) there were different sizes. The typical sherry barrels have a volume of 500 litres and are called Bota (Bota Chica) in Spain, which is derived from Butt.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
