The wine-growing region (formerly Bükkalja) is located in the north-east of Hungary between the much better known areas of Eger and Tokaj. The vineyards on tufa soils cover 1,600 hectares of vines. There are more than a thousand wine cellars dug into the mountains here. The climate is cool but with plenty of sunshine. Mainly white wines are produced here. The most important varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Leányka, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling) and Zweigelt.
