The winery is located in the municipality of Dross in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Kremstal. It was founded in 1893. In 1994, the business was handed over from Leopold Buchegger to his son Walter Buchegger (1968-2018). With the 2006 vintage, the new wine cellar was put into operation and the headquarters moved from Gedersdorf to Dross. After the untimely death of Walter Buchegger, the winery has been run by Silke Mayr (Weingut Vorspannhof Mayr) and the team from Weingut Buchegger since June 2018.
The vineyards cover eleven hectares of vineyards in the Moosburgerin, Tiefenthal and Vordernberg (Gedersdorf) vineyards, mostly on loess and conglomerate weathered soils. They are 90% planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner (the leading variety with more than 50% of the stock), Riesling, Roter Veltliner and Chardonnay, and 10% with the red wine variety Zweigelt. In the vineyards, the highest attention is paid to natural, environmentally friendly cultivation, the preservation of humus-rich soil, the care of old vine cultures and extreme yield limitation.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
