Brunnenhäuschen

single vineyard in the municipality of Westhofen (Wonnegau area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen, east of the Morstein site and above the Steingrube site. The name is based on a spring to which a water reservoir is connected. It was already mentioned as an outstanding site in 1280. The south-facing vineyards at 180 to 240 metres above sea level with a slope of up to 10% cover 30 hectares of vineyards. The best part is the "Abtserde" vineyard, which was an independent site until the land consolidation in 1971. The soils consist of stony, sandy loam and limestone. They are partly reddish in colour due to the high iron content and are known as terra rossa. Here, mainly Riesling,Pinot Noir, Silvaner and Dornfelder are cultivated. The wineries Gutzler Gerhard, Keller Klaus (in the Abtserde vineyard), Schwahn-Fehlinger, Spies Uwe and Wittmann Philipp, for example, have shares in the site.
