The origins of the important wine trading house "Harvey's of Bristol" in the port city of Bristol in south-west England date back to 1796. In that year, the cellar that still exists today was opened in Denmark Street, located under an Augustinian monastery built in 1140 that no longer exists. The first John Harvey joined the firm in 1822. John Harvey III made his mark with innovative promotional activities for the port wines and sherries marketed by the company.
