Designation for a generation of offspring resulting from a sexual cross between two genetically different parent lines. The abbreviation "F" stands for the Latin filia (= daughter), the number after it indicates the order of the generation (e.g. F1 = first filial generation, F2 = second filial generation, etc.). The F1 arises directly from the crossing of two individuals of the so-called parent generation (P generation).
In classical plant breeding - such as grapevines - the F1 generation is only genetically uniform if both parents are homozygous (homozygous). However, as grape varieties are usually heterozygous (heterozygous), the F1 often shows great genetic diversity (segregation) in crosses. The individual plants often differ greatly in characteristics such as vigour, disease resistance, berry size, grape colour or aroma.
