French term for bottle (derived from the lat. butticula = barrel), not only for wine, but also for beer or milk. It is a colloquial term without meaning in wine law. In Austria and Germany it is used to designate a wine bottle with a volume of 0.75 litres, regardless of the shape of the bottle. However, this differs from region to region, as in southern Germany it usually refers to the slim Schlegel bottle. The term "Bouteille lourde" describes a bottle made of heavy glass (lourde = heavy). See also a complete list of all bottle designations under Bottles as also generally under Wine Vessels.
