Boccalino

In the Swiss canton of Ticino, the common name (Italian boccale = jug) for a ceramic drinking vessel with a volume of about 0.25 litres. It is the reduced form of a former Italian wine measure. The bulbous vessel with foot, handle and beak is painted with ring-shaped bands, wine motifs or Ticino motifs such as famous buildings and monuments. It is mainly used to serve Merlot and Nostrano, which are predominant in Ticino. See also under Hollow measures and wine vessels.
