Blue Zweigelt

Synonym (also Blaue Zweigeltrebe) for the grape variety Zweigelt; see there.

The red grape variety (breeding number Klosterneuburg 181-2-71) is a new variety between St. Laurent x Blaufränkisch (which was confirmed by DNA analyses carried out in 1997). Synonyms are Blaue Zweigeltrebe, Blauer Zweigelt, Cvaigelt, Cveigelt, Klosterneuburg 71, Rotburger, Semenac Cerni 71, Zweigelt 71, Zweigeltrebe and Zwiegelt.

Naming

The cross was made back in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt (1888-1964) at the Höhere Bundeslehranstalt und Bundesamt für Wein- und Obstbau Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria. He initially labelled the new variety "St. Laurent × Blaufränkisch". After the usual lengthy trial period, it was also used and distributed in practice under this name. However, it was not given its final name, which is commonly used today, until relatively late.
