The red grape variety originates from the Elsass or Germany (the former affiliation of Alsace to Germany explains the German names). Synonyms include Blue Franconian grape, Blue Hartweg grape, Alsatian, Franconian grape, Grobrot, Grobschwarze, Hartweg grape, Quille de Coque, Saumoirau, Schwarzgrobe, Black Hängling, and Tauberschwarz. It may be identical to the variety Tauberschwarz (with the synonym Blue Hängling). According to DNA analyses conducted in 2013, it originates from a presumably natural crossing between Gouais Blanc (White Heunisch) x unknown father variety. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics for more information). In 2016, no stock was reported (Statistics Kym Anderson).

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
