The red grape variety comes from Alsace, the former affiliation to Germany explains the German names. Synonyms are Blaue Frankentraube, Blaue Hartwegstraube, Elsässer, Frankentraube, Grobrot, Grobschwarze, Hartwegstraube, Quille de Coque, Saumoirau, Schwarzgrobe and Schwarzer Hängling. Despite snowy synonyms, it should not be confused with the variety Tauberschwarz (Blue Hängling, Hartwegraube). Whether there is a connection to the variety Poulsard (Quille de Coque) is not known. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Gouais Blanc (Heunisch) x unknown variety. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). In 2016 no stock was reported (statistics Kym Anderson).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
