The red grape variety possibly originates from South America. Synonyms are Criolla Mediana 2, Dolcino, Laurenzana, Rosa del Perú, Rose of Peru, San Francisco, Santa Chiara, Uva Criolla San Francisco and Uva San Francisco. It should not be confused with the Australian variety Black Prince (Merbein), the Ukrainian table grape variety Black Prence or the French variety Cinsaut (synonym Black Prince). Possibly there is a connection to the Argentinian variety Moscatel Rosada (with synonym Rose of Peru). This could also be indicated by the parentage Mission (Listán Prieto) x Muscat d'Alexandrie, which was clarified by DNA analysis in 2013 (see also under Criolla). The variety is suitable for winepress and table grape. It was a partner of the new varieties Black Defiance and Black Eagle. In 2016, 7 hectares of vines were registered under the name Criolla Mediana in Argentina and 1 hectare under the name Black Prince in Chile (statistics Kym Anderson).

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
