Birstaler Muscat

The white grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Seyval Blanc x Bacchus. Synonyms are Muscat de la Birse and VB 86-6; eponym is the Rhine tributary Birs. Genes of Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera are contained. The hybrid was crossed in 1986 by the Swiss private breeder Valentin Blattner in Soyhières in the canton of Jura in Switzerland. The early to medium ripening vine is relatively resistant to both powdery mildew and frost, but susceptible to trickling. It produces low-acid white wines with a discreet muscat tone and is also used as table grape. The variety is cultivated by the breeder in his vineyards in Soyhières, as well as on a small scale in Belgium. In 2016, one hectare of vineyard was designated in Switzerland (Kym Anderson statistics).
