In relation to grape varieties, biomarkers are measurable characteristics at a molecular or genetic level that are usually determined by DNA analysis and can be used to recognise, assign or predict certain characteristics of a vine. With the help of such markers, numerous characteristics important for viticulture and oenology can be recorded at an early stage of development, such as disease resistance, berry colour or aroma potential.
The frequently used term "DNA marker" (e.g. in the VIVC catalogue) refers to the most important subgroup of biomarkers, as it is based exclusively on directly measurable genetic variants such as SSR or SNP profiles.
