This consumer information is a mandatory labelling element which, according to harmonised EU law, must be indicated on "pre-packaged foods" (pre-packages). It indicates the date up to which a foodstuff can be consumed in any case without any significant loss of taste and quality and without any health risk if it is stored properly (in particular if the storage temperature stated with the best-before date is observed). Since this is a best-before dateand not an expiry date, the food can usually still be consumed after the specified date. In contrast to foodstuffs, top-quality wines only reach their peak (which is not related to a specific day) after an appropriate storage period; the so-called drinking maturity.
