The red grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Basgana, Basgana Nera, Basgano, Basgano Nero, Besegano, Besgano Rosso, Bezgano Nero and Bosegan. It must not be confused with the Colombana Nera variety (with synonym Besgano Nero), despite the fact that synonyms or morphological similarities seem to indicate this. Nothing is known about the parentage (parenthood) or a possible relation to the Besgano Bianco variety. The variety is only cultivated in very small quantities in Tuscany. In 2016, however, no stock was reported (Kym Anderson).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
