Bernkasteler Doctor

single vineyard in the municipality of Bernkastel (Bernkastel area) in the German Moselle wine-growing region. The name, which has not been clearly clarified, is derived from an unverifiable legend. The Trier archbishop Boemund II. (1354-1362) was seriously ill with fever at Landshut Castle in 1360. No medicine helped and all medical art was in vain. Finally, he was allegedly cured by drinking two bottles of Bernkastel wine. As a sign that the wine was "the true doctor", the vineyard was granted the privilege by the Elector to call itself "Bernkasteler Doctor" from then on. However, the name probably only came into being in the 17th century, when the clerical councillor Dr. Heinrich Linden inherited the vineyard in 1677....
