The winery is located in the municipality of Schweigen (Südliche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz on the border with Alsace. The first foundation stone was already laid around 1900 with the purchase of vineyards in Wissembourg. That is why two thirds of the vineyards are on Alsatian soil. In addition to earlier cattle and arable farming, viticulture has existed in the family for over 100 years, but it was not until 1971 that the marketing of bottled wine began. The farm is run by Gerd Bernhart. The vineyards cover 17 hectares of vines in the single vineyard Sonnenberg (Schweigen) with Raedling at its core, which is located on French territory in Alsace.
