The white grape variety (also Berdanel) originates from France. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Savagnin Blanc (Traminer) x unknown variety. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The medium-maturing, low-yielding vine is susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and botrytis. It is grown in the département of Ariège in the extreme south of France, in the border region with Spain. The variety, which is threatened with extinction, has been reactivated by individual winegrowers. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
