This red grape variety (also known as Bastardo Espanhol Noir) originates from Portugal. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2018, it comes from a presumably natural crossing between Hebén x Trousseau Noir. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular Genetics for more information). It should not be confused with the varieties Castelão Francês or Tinta de Lisboa (both with synonym Bastardo Espanhol). No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
