The white grape variety originates from Germany. Synonyms are basilicum, basilicum grape and basil grape. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2018, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Pinot x Chasselas. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The vine yields aromatic white wines and is also used as table grape. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
