Barcelo

The white grape variety is a new variety between Azal Branco x Amaral. Synonyms are Barcello and Barcelos. This was confirmed by DNA analyses carried out in 2013. However, this is based on only 19 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The cross was made in Portugal by grower José Leão Ferreira de Almeida.

Characteristics

The medium-ripening vine is susceptible to coulure. It produces fresh, fruity white wines.

Cultivation areas

The variety is mainly cultivated in the Alentejo region as well as in the Beiras region such as Dão. In 2016, 26 hectares of vineyards were designated in Portugal (Kym Anderson statistics).
