DOCG area for red wine in the south of the Italian region of Piedmont. The vineyards cover around 3,500 hectares of vines, mostly on hills at around 150 to 400 metres above sea level. They are located in the Monferrato hills in 167 municipalities in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. There are three subzones in the province of Asti. The subzone Nice was classified as an independent DOCG area in 2014. The other two are Colli Astiani and Tinella. The names can be indicated on the label if the grapes come 100% from there. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna followed by the vineyard name can be indicated on the bottle label.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
