The Ball of Wine was first held by the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wineries) in 2001 at the Electoral Palace in Mainz (Rhineland-Palatinate) with 600 ball guests. Since 2003, the Ball of Wine has been held at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden (Hesse). The guests are personalities from business, politics and public life, national and international winemakers, as well as visitors from all over Germany. The event on April 25, 2009, with around 1,500 guests, was held under the motto "Enjoy the freedom" on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Wines and sparkling wines from all 13 German wine growing regions were presented and offered for tasting. The musical entertainment was provided by the pop group "Die Prinzen", DJ John Jürgens and the Bundeswehr Big Band, among others. Due to the integration of the Mainz Wine Exchange, international journalists were also present as guests. The Ball of Wine is considered the "German Wine Event". See also under wine events.
