A term used especially in southern Germany not only for the season, but also for the grape harvest, the wine yield and the harvest in general. Hierscht is common in Luxembourg and Herbscht in Lorraine. In viticulture, numerous terms are derived from this, such as Herbsten (harvests), Herbstbann (autumn ban), Herbstbuch (cellar book), Herbstkurier (autumn courier), Herbstmuck (autumn jewellery), Herbstordnung (autumn order), Herbstschmüerel (autumn smithy ) and Herbstwagen (autumn wagon ). See also under wine-growing customs.
There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
