A term used especially in southern Germany not only for the season, but also for the grape harvest, the wine yield and the harvest in general. Hierscht is common in Luxembourg and Herbscht in Lorraine. Numerous terms such as Herbsten (harvests), Herbstbann (autumn ban), Herbstbuch (cellar book), Herbstmuck (autumn jewellery), Herbstordnung (autumn order), Herbstschmüerel (autumn smithy ) and Herbstwagen (autumn wagon ) are derived from this.
