Arvine

The white grape variety originates from the border region between Italy and Switzerland. Synonyms are Arvena, Arvin, Arvina, Arvinaz, Arvine, Arvine Bonne, Arvine Mauvaise, Arvine Petite (2nd main name), Arvine Rouge and Petite Arvine. The name refers to the fact that the vine supposedly once came to Switzerland via the Savoy Arva Valley.

Arvine - Traube und Trieb (Blätter)

Origin & parentage

The parentage is unknown (ex VIVC catalogue). The variety was mentioned in 1602 in Sitten (Sion) in the canton of Valais. From the end of the 19th century, it was labelled Arvine Petite to distinguish it from the Arvine Grande variety. According to DNA analyses by Dr José Vouillamoz, both have a parent-offspring relationship with the Rèze variety (ex Wine Grapes). In Switzerland, the Arvine variety belongs to the " Alte Gewächse" group.
