The state in the south of the USA with the capital Little Rock covers around 137,732 km². It borders Missouri to the north, Mississippi and Tennessee to the east, Louisiana to the south and Texas and Oklahoma to the west.

The first vineyards were planted in the Altus region in the Arkansas River valley in the early 19th century. Immigrants from Europe, particularly from Switzerland and Germany, established viticulture there, initially mainly with American varieties. The region developed into one of the oldest continuously cultivated wine-growing areas in the USA. During Prohibition (1920-1933), viticulture largely came to a standstill, but was revitalised in the decades that followed by family-run businesses.
