Anakreon

The Greek poet Anakreon (~580-495 B.C.) was born in ancient Teos, an Ionic city in Asia Minor in what is now Turkey. He was highly honored at the court of Polycrates (ruled from 538 to 522 B.C.), the tyrant of Samos, where he spent most of his life as a respected court poet. Legend has it that Anakreon died at the age of 85 after choking on a grapevine. Love, wine and cheerful conviviality were the main themes of his songs written in the Ionian dialect, which were famous for their beauty and grace. The poetry collection Anakreonteia was then named after him, an anonymous collection of about 60 poems about love, wine, beautiful young men, Aphrodite, Erots, Graces and Dionysus from the 1st century BC to the 5th/6th century AD.
