The American physiologist, oenologist, publicist and university lecturer Maynard A. Amerine (1911-1998) was appointed in 1935 to the University of California 's viticulture department, which was revived after the American Prohibition (1920-1933). He would later head it for five years from 1957 to 1962. Amerine began his work by analysing numerous European (of which he imported hundreds from Spain, Italy, France and Greece ) and American grape varieties and created an extensive herbarium. This was then completed after him by Dr Harold P. Olmo. He was also intensively involved in the re-education of winegrowers, as the knowledge had been largely lost during Prohibition because many farms or winegrowers had stopped producing wine.
For me, Lexicon from wein.plus is the most comprehensive and best source of information about wine currently available.
