American Wine Society

Largest consumer-based wine organization in the USA with headquarters in Englewood, Ohio. It was founded in 1967 as a non-profit and educational organization under the leadership of Dr. Konstatin Frank. Membership is open to anyone over the age of 21 interested in wine. The motto is "Promoting the appreciation of wine through education". Today the AWS has a total of 4,000 members in 45 US states, about a third of whom are amateur winemakers. Members also include well-known wineries such as Castello Banfi, Charles Krug Winery and Gallo. Initially, the focus was on US wines, but this has since expanded to include products from around the world. Since 1975, a wine competition has been held annually in November, initially for amateurs, and since 1986 commercially, ending with a three-day congress. The AWS Wine Journal and AWS News are published for members. See also under Wine Institutions.

Dr. Christa Hanten

For my many years of work as an editor with a wine and culinary focus, I always like to inform myself about special questions at Wine lexicon. Spontaneous reading and following links often leads to exciting discoveries in the wide world of wine.
