single vineyard in the municipality of Engehöll (large municipality of Oberwesel) in the German Mittelrhein wine-growing region, which lies in a side valley of the Rhine through which the Oberbach stream flows. The name could refer to berries growing on the slope; the site was first mentioned in 1416 as "Berhelde" and in 1484 as "Bernstejn". The south-facing vineyards at 90 to 140 metres above sea level with a 55 to 70% slope cover 11 hectares of vines. The soils consist of brown-grey weathered slate (Hunsrück slate) with a small proportion of sandstone. Due to the high proportion of stone, the site has an excellent heat storage capacity. The wooded mountain peaks protect against winds. Above all, Riesling is cultivated here. The Lanius-Knab winery, for example, has a share.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
