Lump

single vineyard in the municipality of Escherndorf (Maindreieck area) in the German wine-growing region of Franconia. In 1688, the site "Am Lumpen" was less than one hectare in size, the current size was achieved by adding the three sites Bergsteig, Katzensteig and Oelgrube in 1912 and further changes during the land consolidation in 1970. The name most likely goes back to the poor appearance that this slope, always threatened by washing out, used to offer after heavy downpours. The very steep vineyards, which face the Main River from the south-east to the south-south-west at an altitude of 190 to 270 metres above sea level with a slope gradient of 40 to 75%, extend in a wide arc around the municipality of Escherndorf. They cover 37 hectares of vineyards on shell limestone soils with intercalations of Lettenkeuper and loess loam layers in the western part.
