Designation for wines that are vinified using an artisanal, non-industrialised approach and non-invasive methods (as much as necessary, as little as possible). They are often produced using traditional methods and generally have an original, characterful and rustic character. Adding to the confusion is the fact that there are (as yet) no clear, legally defined production rules or internationally recognised designations and the many names are often used interchangeably.
In German-speaking countries, the collective term "alternative wine" is commonly used for these styles, but has no meaning under wine law. Internationally, however, the term "natural wine" has become established. It is used in specialist literature, at trade fairs and by associations, including the RAW WINE-Fair (Isabelle Legeron MW), the Italian organisations Vini Veri and Triple A, the French movement La Renaissance des Appellations (Nicolas Joly) and numerous associations and importers in the USA, Australia, Japan and the UK.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
